Spring School in Philosophical Methods: Experimental Philosophy and Learning Theory
Instructor: Prof Shaun Nichols (Cornell University)
Nichols is a world-leading expert in the fields of experimental philosophy, moral psychology, and the philosophy of cognitive science. He is spending the Spring Semester 2023 at the University of Sheffield as Leverhulme Visiting Professor.
Where and when: May 24-25-26, 2023. 2 pm-4 pm. The University of Sheffield.
What: This is a 3-day Spring School for students and early-career researchers in philosophy and related disciplines. In the last two decades or so, the methodological toolkit of philosophers has significantly expanded. In order to read and write research articles in philosophy, the customary competence in deductive logic isn’t sufficient any longer. The school will provide an introduction to a novel and exciting research paradigm in experimental philosophy, namely, how theories of statistical learning can explain the acquisition of key philosophical concepts and theories.
How to apply: Those interested in participating to the school are invited to send a short CV and a 1-page motivation letter to p.baldi@sheffield.ac.uk. Deadline: April 16, 2023.
Costs: No participation fee is charged. Those selected to participate in the school will also have the opportunity to attend Shaun Nichols’s Leverhulme Lectures (see here).
