Shaun Nichols (Philosophy, Cornell), a world-leading expert in the fields of experimental philosophy, moral psychology, and the philosophy of cognitive science, has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Visiting Professorship to spend the Spring semester 2023 at the Philosophy Department and the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies of the University of Sheffield.
The aims of Nichols’s visit are: (i) to disseminate Nichols’s outstanding expertise in philosophical and experimental methods, as well as the most recent results of his cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, to academics, students, and to the general public; and (ii) to engage in collaborative research with philosophers and cognitive scientists at the University of Sheffield. To achieve these aims, Nichols will participate in the following activities (amongst others):
Leverhulme Lectures. The Concept of Self: From Birds to Buddhists
May 24-25-26, 2023. 6 pm-8 pm. The University of Sheffield.
These lectures explore the natural history of the concept of self, tracing it back to practices of re-identification in nonhuman animals, and discuss the relevance of this history for philosophical approaches to the self, both Eastern and Western. Click here for further information.
Spring School in Philosophical Methods. Experimental Philosophy and Learning Theory

The Spring School will provide an introduction to a novel research paradigm in experimental philosophy, namely, how theories of statistical learning can explain the acquisition of key philosophical concepts and theories. In collaboration with his academic host, Dr Luca Barlassina, Nichols will conduct research on the function and evolution of social emotions such as shame, guilt, and pride.
